Are you dreading the idea of picking out what to wear for your engagement photos? I love bright and bold colors, but as a photographer, one of my biggest nightmares is when the gorgeous red number you chose to wear for your engagement or couples session causes a color splash on your skin that is less than dreamy.

Now I know what you’re thinking, “but Chey, isn’t that what Photoshop is for?” Technically yes, but sometimes depending on the vibrance of the color splash, it may be hard to correct the color back to your original skin tone. Is it impossible? Eh. Is it worth the risk? It depends.
One of the biggest factors that will impact whether or not you experience color splash from your outfit or your environment? Light.

We all know water is clear, right? So when looking at a body of water, like a lake, if the sky is clear, the water will appear blue. If the sky is cloudy, oftentimes the lake will appear murky and dull, or have a greyish/green tint to it. The same thing happens when light reflects onto your clothing and bounces back onto your skin.
So what’s the fix? Neutrals. Neutrals are magical for engagement photos, or couples photos. Neutrals are not only a safe bet for ensuring your skin tones are true to color, but they are a great way to take the focus off your outfit, and back onto the connection you have with your partner. The other great thing about neutrals? No matter your backdrop, whether you’re frolicking through a meadow in Crested Butte, posing with the gorgeous Colorado colors of Kenosha pass, taking a stroll through Garden of the Gods, or standing on a mountaintop taking photos as the sun sets… Neutrals will always compliment your backdrop and still ensure you stand out amongst the beauty of the nature around you.
Before we move on, I just want to give a huge shout-out to the bride in the photos above... She handmade the dress she's wearing for her engagement photos and to be honest? I was BLOWN AWAY!

Colors are incredible, especially when used right. Knowing which colors complement each other, complement your skin tones, and your backdrop is the key to getting them right. Narrowing down what colors pair well can be overwhelming. If you're still on the fence about what to wear to your engagement session, don't worry! I’ve put together a free wardrobe guide for you that takes the guesswork out of deciding what to wear.
